Leopold Spiess is the first owner of the inn known by name.
1665
Melchior Hiniz, the owner at the Time, commissioned the making of the wrought iron inn sign which to this day hangs outside the hotel. The white Maltese cross symbolizes the hospitality which the Knights of the Maltese Order showed to pilgrims on their journey to the Holy Land. The vine leaves remind us of the coat of arms of Burgundy which commemorates the wedding of Emporer Maximilian I. and Maria of Burgundy.
1769
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed at the "Weisses Kreuz"

At 5.30 p.m. on Dec. 15, 1769, the conductor of the orchestra of the Prince-Bishop in Salzburg, Leopold Mozart, arrived with his 13-year-old son, Wolfgang Amadeus.
We can assume that they were suitably welcomed by the then owner, Jacob Phillip Pichler, who was at that time also Mayor of Innsbruck. He would have escorted them to their room, and we can further assume, that they were well satisfied with ist, as they immediately began to write a letter home, from which the following quotation is taken:

We are well, thank God,
we are lodging at the Weisses Kreuz.

After the first battle on the Berg Isel (2. June) and the victory over the French and Bavarian troops, Andreas Hofer the local hero, commander of the Tyrolean peasant revolt against Napoleon, took up quarters at the "Weisses Kreuz". For a whole year the inn was the centre of activities and meeting place for the self-appointed deputies of the Tyrolean civilguard. In September of that year the couriers of Emporer Franz I. took up quarters at the inn.

Riots broke out between Italian and German nationalistic students. Cesare Battisti, the famous leader of the Italian-speaking Austrians, held his meetings here. During these time the house was partly devastated by German nationalists.
1926
The outer facade was decorated by the well-known fresco painter Rudolf Stolz, from Bozen. Until then the stables had been at ground level. Up to 40 horses were kept there daily, mostly by farmers coming to the local market.
